Hello Lovelies!
Welcome to our first ever My Ballet Box Blog post! We are Kirsten and Sneha, the creators of My Ballet Box and in our latest instagram giveaway, we invited you to get to know us better, and there were so many questions. Here are the answers to some of the most popular questions!
Why did you create My Ballet Box and when did it start?
We created MBB as a way to share our love of ballet with the world while supporting the next generation of dancers. The idea first came to light very late one evening in November 2017 and our first box was sent out in June 2018. The dance world is incredibly complicated, and new tools and innovations can be confusing. My Ballet Box find the best brands, and most creative ideas and puts them together in a convenient way. We also love the surprise element. It’s so exciting to receive a monthly surprise in the post!
What is your favourite product that’s been in the box?
Sneha- It’s so hard to choose! If I had to choose one, it would probably be the foot roller. It’s just so important to treat your body well!
Kirsten- Oh I would have to say my favourite product so far has been the Make-up Eraser. I have such sensitive skin that having something to take make-up off (including heavy duty stage make up) without the need for a cleanser is fantastic.
What does dance mean to you?
Sneha- To me, dance is a way to quiet everything that’s happening in the world, while still feeling connected.
Kirsten- Yes I second that Sneha! For me when I was growing up it was such a release for me to go to dance classes especially when I was going through tough exams at school. It was my way of letting go and de-stressing and forgetting about everything else by just focussing on dancing - which we all know demands all our focus! I was also painfully shy when I was wee and dance definitely changed that.
Do you dance yourselves?
Sneha- I trained in a few styles of dance as a child and dance has always been a huge part of my life, but I didn’t find ballet until I was in my early 20s. It’s actually how Kirsten and I met, she was my first ballet teacher.
Kirsten- Yes, I was a professional ballet dancer. I trained at my local school in Glasgow, Scotland, then went through the associate programs at Scottish Ballet and then moved to London to train professionally at Central School of Ballet. After graduating I was extremely fortunate to dance with some wonderful companies like Estonian National Ballet, English National Ballet and The Royal Opera Company in some of the most iconic theatres around the world! I stopped dancing professionally due to a neck injury which was quite a dark time for me as I had not known anything other than dance, but during the time I was recovering I did my Pilates and ballet teacher training, discovered the joy of teaching and found a new love for helping others, which ultimately led me to meet Sneha and later create My Ballet Box. I love the way the universe works!
How old is too old to start dancing?
Sneha- In my opinion, there is no such thing as too old! If I thought that my 20’s was too old to start ballet, My Ballet Box wouldn’t exist! My advice is never stop chasing your dreams because you never know where they may lead you.
Kirsten- 100% agree with Sneha! You are never too old to start something new. I know of professional dancers who only started dancing in their 20’s.
What are your essential products in your ballet bag?
Kirsten- When I was training and dancing professionally the things I wouldn’t leave home without would be my toe pads for my pointe shoes. Those little things are saviours! Oh and definitely my water bottle and hair stuff as I hate having my hair flying around.
Sneha- The most important thing in my dance bag would have to be my booties. My feet just get so cold between classes!
What is the best thing about dancing/ why do you love it so much?
Kirsten- For me it would have to be that euphoric feeling you get when you dance to an inspiring piece of music and especially in front of an audience - it’s addictive!! I also love that dance has given me so many great friends!
Sneha- When I was younger, I loved the camaraderie. As an adult, I love that there is always room for improvement. When you work harder and you can see tangible results.
Thank you for reading our very first My Ballet Box blog. We hope this has shed some light on who we are and if you have any suggestions for future blog posts please feel free to message us!
